College Chapel, Eton College

College Chapel,
Eton College,
Windsor,
SL4 6DW

The foundation stone of College Chapel was laid in 1441, and the building was completed eight years later. Henry VI, who founded Eton is 1440, attached the greatest importance to the religious aspects of his new foundation and ensured that the services would be conducted on a magnificent scale by providing an establishment of 10 priest Fellows, 10 Chaplains, 10 clerks and 16 choristers.

The Chapel contains unique wall-paintings in the Flemish style from the 15th Century (which were part of an event in the Festival in 2024), a stone fan-vaulted ceiling completed in 1959 to replace the unsafe wooden ceiling, and to match the Founder’s original design, and stained glass from the 1950s. A bomb that fell on Upper School in 1940 shattered all the Chapel glass except that in the window above the organ. The east window was inserted in 1952 and is the work of Miss Evie Hone of Dublin. With its deep colours, the Crucifixion in the centre and the Last Supper below, it is considered by many to be one of the masterpieces of modern stained-glass art.

Eton College has been a central part of Windsor Festival throughout its history, and the Festival continues to enjoy a strong partnership with the College.
